VOXI overview
VOXI is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), meaning that they don’t have their own mobile masts – instead, they use the Vodafone network to service their customers.
In fact, VOXI is entirely owned by Vodafone, rather than just leasing mobile network access from them – similar to how Three owns Smarty, and O2 owns giffgaff.
VOXI is a relatively basic mobile network, with a focus on SIM-only deals.
Most of their plans come with a rolling month to month contract, rather than a long term 12 or 24 month agreement. But unlike most other MVNOs, VOXI also offers a range of pay monthly phone plans, on up to a 36 month contract.
You can choose how long you want the contract length to be on most of VOXI’s phone deals, and you can also choose to pay for the phone upfront, which is great.
It’s also possible to order a free SIM from VOXI, and add data once it arrives, with no credit check required. We found VOXI is very easy to get started with.
Each of their tariffs comes with unlimited calls and texts to UK numbers, as well as WiFi calling. It’s also possible to get an eSIM with VOXI, instead of a physical SIM card, if you’d prefer.
One unique thing about VOXI’s plans is they sometimes come with unlimited social media usage, or video streaming, on certain apps, separate from your monthly data limit.
These plans with extra app allowances sometimes cost more, especially the ones with unlimited video streaming, but they might be worth paying more for if this is where most of your data usage comes from.
Coverage and speeds
The Vodafone network generally performs well in towns and cities, and VOXI is no exception.
Vodafone has the second-fastest 5G speeds in the UK, behind Three, meaning that VOXI delivers very good 5G performance. And when Vodafone and Three complete their merger, you should have access to the UK’s best 5G with VOXI.
We’ve seen very fast speeds in areas we’ve tested around Birmingham on VOXI’s network, including more than 100 Mbps on 4G, which is quite good.
We’ve experienced no issues with call dropouts or coverage with VOXI, and we’ve found that their 5G speeds aren’t capped, like they are on some Vodafone SIM plans.
When we tested our VOXI SIM against an unrestricted Vodafone one, we found the performance was the exact same.
Unlike with some other MVNOs, VOXI isn’t getting sub-par service from their parent network – potentially because they are owned by Vodafone directly.
When it comes to 4G signal, Vodafone (and therefore VOXI) doesn’t have the best 4G coverage in the countryside, though they’re not the worst in the UK.
If you live in a very remote area, EE or one of their MVNOs might be a better choice, although EE network SIM plans are normally quite expensive.
Roaming allowances
VOXI is not the best when it comes to international roaming.
To use your allowances abroad, you have to buy one of VOXI’s roaming packs. There are no free roaming allowances like you get with iD Mobile, Tesco Mobile, or most other MVNOs.
These roaming add-ons can be quite expensive, especially if you’re going overseas for two weeks or more. And even with one of these passes, you’re still limited to 20GB of monthly usage, and you won’t have access to unlimited social media.
Beyond Europe, there are different roaming passes you can buy, but they’re more restrictive – the most expensive one currently comes with just 4GB of data.
If you do travel overseas as a VOXI customer, we’d actually recommend buying a foreign SIM card or eSIM most of the time, especially if your phone supports dual SIM usage.
You’ll still be able to receive calls and texts to your VOXI number without buying one of their roaming plans, just you’ll need another way to make calls and use mobile data.
Value for money
VOXI tends to offer quite good value for money, but they’re not always the cheapest provider on the market.
On a cost per gigabyte basis, providers like Smarty and iD Mobile tend to offer lower prices on pay as you go SIMs. VOXI can be a bit expensive if you want unlimited data.
This is especially true given you don’t get any inclusive roaming allowances included when you buy a VOXI mobile plan.
However, VOXI can begin to offer better value if you’re smart about buying a plan with certain app data included.
If you go to your phone’s settings, and search for data usage, you’ll be able to see what sorts of apps use up most of your mobile data.
If more than half of your usage is social media (Facebook, X, Instagram) or video streaming (TikTok, YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime) you might be able to get away with a very small 10-20GB monthly data limit with VOXI, assuming you choose a plan with one of their unlimited video/social perks.
There are also plans with unlimited music streaming, although apps like Spotify often download music you listen to constantly, meaning they don’t tend to use up a lot of data.
Below, we’ve put a widget that compares VOXI, Smarty, and iD Mobile’s month to month deals with at least 30GB of data, to see which is the cheapest when you’re reading this. You can also use our SIM-only deals page to compare the cheapest plans at the moment.
When it comes to pay monthly phones, it’s a similar story.
VOXI isn’t normally as cheap as a provider like Three, when it comes to the latest iPhone for example, but they can be worth considering if you don’t need inclusive roaming, and inclusive social media or video streaming is appealing to you.
Also, VOXI’s pay monthly phone plans are often a lot more flexible than what most providers offer, especially if you want to vary the contract length.
Customer service
VOXI uses the same customer service team as Vodafone.
The good thing about this is they’re UK-based, and are generally quite helpful. Three customer support is currently outsourced to a foreign country, for example.
However, unlike when buying from Vodafone directly, there isn’t a phone number to contact VOXI, as far as we could find.
To get help, you need to go through their live chat portal, which first tries to display AI-generated answers. We found this chatbot a bit difficult to navigate, and generally unhelpful – and it can be hard to get connected to a real person.
Once you do reach someone over live chat though, VOXI is helpful, and resolves issues quickly.
In terms of customer satisfaction, VOXI is about average. Their customer service is good, but they’re let down by how hard it can be to speak with a real person.
Verdict: should you join VOXI?
There are a lot of things to like about VOXI if you’re looking for a new mobile network:
- They offer fast 5G, and good 4G speeds and coverage – the same as what Vodafone customers get from our testing, even though Vodafone SIM plans are a lot more expensive, and often come with speed caps.
- Unlimited social media and/or music and video streaming is included on some of their plans.
- VOXI tends to offer quite competitive monthly costs, given the amount of data and the data-free usage allowances included.
- VOXI’s phone contracts are quite flexible compared to most other providers.
However, there are some downsides to VOXI it’s also worth keeping in mind:
- They have no inclusive roaming allowances.
- They’re not the cheapest provider on the market if you won’t be taking advantage of the inclusive app usage allowances very much. Unlimited data SIMs are generally cheaper with other providers.
- Accessing their customer support can be difficult – there is no contact centre with people you can talk to.
Overall, we rate VOXI 3.8 out of 5.
The way their deals are set up, with unlimited usage of certain apps, and flexible contract lengths, is really good to see.
We also found that their network offered very fast 4G and 5G, the same as Vodafone, from our testing.
However, VOXI is a bit let down by their roaming allowances and over-reliance in chatbots.
Best VOXI alternatives
Depending on what you’re looking for, there are some other mobile networks it’s also worth considering, if you’re a bit put off by some of the downsides to VOXI.
1. Smarty
Compared to VOXI, Smarty offers:
- Faster 5G speeds – they use the Three network, which is the fastest in the UK.
- Better roaming – up to 12GB per month in the EU, free of charge.
- Cheaper prices on their SIM-only deals, though there are no special data-free allowances on certain apps.
2. Tesco Mobile
Compared to VOXI, Tesco Mobile offers:
- Much better roaming – you can use your entire allowance abroad, in most EU destinations.
- A better range of SIM plans, including some on a contract.
- Slightly worse speeds and coverage, especially on 5G, since they use the O2 network.
3. Lebara
Compared to VOXI, Lebara offers:
- Lower monthly costs on similar SIM-only deals.
- Higher roaming allowances, plus free international minutes when calling certain countries.
- Similar network performance, as they also use Vodafone.
